Screen resolution to DPI
A resolution has no dpi until you know the screen size. Pick a resolution and a diagonal below to see its ppi, the Android density bucket Android will use and the resulting dp width — the same math as the DPI calculator, presented as a lookup chart.
Common resolutions at common screen sizes
ppi = √(width² + height²) ÷ diagonal. Each cell shows ppi; the badge underneath is the Android density bucket closest to that ppi.

What dpi is 1920x1080?
1920×1080 has 2,202.9 diagonal pixels. Divided by the diagonal in inches that gives roughly 440 ppi on a 5-inch phone, 157 ppi on a 14-inch laptop and 82 ppi on a 27-inch monitor. The resolution is identical in all three cases; only the physical size of the pixels changes. This is why "what dpi is 1080p" has no single answer, and why every dpi calculator asks for the screen size as well.
On Android the number that matters for layout is not the ppi but the reported density. A 1080-pixel-wide phone running at 480 dpi is 360 dp wide (1080 × 160 ÷ 480 = 360), which is the width nearly every mobile design assumes. The same phone at its raw 440 ppi would be 393 dp — close, but not the number designers test against. See ppi vs dpi for why the two values diverge.
For a 1440p phone (2560×1440) the diagonal is 2,937 pixels: about 515 ppi at 5.7 inches and about 500 ppi at 5.9 inches, which lands in the xxxhdpi-ish range but is almost always shipped at 560 or 640 dpi so the dp viewport stays around 400–460 dp.
Resolution names, decoded
| Name | Pixels | Means |
|---|---|---|
| 720p / HD | 1280×720 | 720 vertical lines |
| 1080p / FHD | 1920×1080 | 1,080 vertical lines |
| 1440p / QHD | 2560×1440 | 1,440 vertical lines, 4× the pixels of 720p |
| 2160p / 4K UHD | 3840×2160 | 2,160 vertical lines, 4× the pixels of 1080p |
| 2K | 2048×1080 (cinema) or 2560×1440 (marketing) | ambiguous — phones and monitors use it differently |
How many devices we track run at each density
Out of the 63 devices in our device database, the shipped density breaks down like this — useful when you are deciding which drawable folder or emulator profile to test against:
- 160 dpi — 1 device
- 240 dpi — 1 device
- 320 dpi — 3 devices
- 420 dpi — 5 devices
- 440 dpi — 7 devices
- 450 dpi — 1 device
- 460 dpi — 3 devices
- 480 dpi — 42 devices
Resolutions where each of these actually appears are listed in the screen resolutions list; for the lookup of a specific phone use the density bucket converter.
