Screen resolutions list: Android phones, with density and dp
Every resolution in this list is taken from a real device we track (63 of them), not from a generic spec sheet. For each one you get the physical pixels, the density Android actually runs at, the resulting dp viewport and the aspect ratio — which together explain why two phones with very different pixel counts can lay out an app identically.
Resolutions grouped by pixel count

What common resolution names mean
1920 × 1080 — 1080p, Full HD, FHD
The desktop/TV 1080p standard. On phones 1080 appears as the short edge (1080×1920 at 16:9, 1080×2340 at 19.5:9, 1080×2400 at 20:9) because phones are used in portrait. A phone reporting 1080×2400 is not a 1080p monitor — it is a far taller canvas at the same horizontal pixel count.
2560 × 1440 — 1440p, QHD
QHD. On phones this usually ships as 1440×3120 or 1440×3200 at 20:9 rather than the 16:9 desktop shape. Many flagships render at this resolution only when the user turns off the default scaled-down mode.
2400 × 1080 — FHD+ (20:9)
The most common Android flagship resolution class of the last five years. At 480 dpi it gives a 360×800 dp viewport, which is what most layouts are designed against.
2340 × 1080 — FHD+ (19.5:9)
The 2019–2021 standard, e.g. Pixel 4/5 and many Galaxy S10-era phones. Same 360 dp width at 480 dpi; only the height differs from 2400×1080.
720 × 1600 — HD+
Budget-phone territory. Runs at 320 dpi, so the dp viewport is 360×800 — identical logical size to a flagship, just fewer physical pixels. This is why a cheap phone and an expensive phone lay out the same app identically.
1280 × 2856 / 1344 × 2992 — Pixel 9 Pro / Pro XL
Modern LTPO panels at about 20:9 with a 480 dpi runtime density, which is why they report a 427–489 physical ppi but still scale as xxhdpi.
3840 × 2160 — 4K UHD
Not used by phones. Tablets and desktop monitors only; Android TV boxes often run it at 320 or 480 dpi, producing a huge dp viewport rather than a crisp small one.
Full device list: resolution, ppi, dpi, dp
Sorted by pixel count. ppi is physical sharpness (diagonal pixels ÷ diagonal inches). dpi is the density Android reports, which determines the dp viewport: dp = px × 160 ÷ dpi.

Density buckets this list maps to
Android snaps every panel to one of six density buckets. The bucket decides which drawable folder is used and how many px one dp becomes.
| Bucket | dpi | Scale | 1 dp = |
|---|---|---|---|
| ldpi | 120 | 0.75× | 0.75 px |
| mdpi | 160 | 1× | 1 px |
| hdpi | 240 | 1.5× | 1.5 px |
| xhdpi | 320 | 2× | 2 px |
| xxhdpi | 480 | 3× | 3 px |
| xxxhdpi | 640 | 4× | 4 px |
How to use this list
- Test layouts against dp, not px. The dp viewport column is what your UI actually gets. Phone widths cluster at 360, 393, 411 and 412 dp — design for 360 and make sure nothing breaks at 412.
- Pick a screenshot size that matches a real device. If you need a marketing screenshot, use a resolution from this list at its dp viewport rather than an arbitrary canvas.
- Check the density before blaming the layout. Two 1080×2400 phones at 420 and 480 dpi differ by 14% in dp width; a layout that fits one can clip on the other.
Frequently asked questions
What is the most common Android screen resolution?
1080 × 2400 (20:9 FHD+) is the single most common flagship resolution in current Android hardware, followed by 1080 × 2340 (19.5:9) and 1440 × 3120 (QHD+). Budget devices cluster at 720 × 1600. In the table above the resolution class with the most tracked devices is listed first.
What does 1920×1080 mean on a phone?
It means 1,920 pixels across the long edge and 1,080 across the short edge — a 16:9 canvas. Phones are held in portrait, so Android reports the same panel as 1080×1920. If a modern phone lists 1080×2400, it has the same number of horizontal pixels as 1080p but a taller panel.
Is higher resolution always better?
No. Above roughly 400 ppi the eye cannot resolve individual pixels at normal viewing distance, so 1440p on a 6.1-inch phone buys very little over 1080p while costing battery and GPU time. What matters for layout is the dp viewport, which is resolution divided by density: a 1440p phone at 560 dpi and a 1080p phone at 420 dpi both give roughly a 411 dp width.
Why does a 1080p phone report 480 dpi?
Because Android's runtime density is a manufacturer choice snapped to a density bucket, not the physical ppi. A 1080×2400 6.3-inch panel is about 418 ppi, but almost every vendor ships it at 480 dpi (xxhdpi) so that apps get a 360 dp wide viewport. The physical ppi column in the table above is the true sharpness; the dpi column is what Android uses.
How do I find my own phone's resolution?
Run adb shell wm size for the physical panel and adb shell wm density for the runtime density. Dividing width by (density / 160) gives the dp width, which is the number that decides whether a layout fits.
